Society and environment

For the environment

Breastfeeding helps to protect our environment.

  • Breast milk needs no packaging.
  • Breast milk requires no bottles or teats.
  • Breast milk does not need to be transported to the consumer.

For Irish society

Breastfeeding has many benefits for society.

  • There is less environmental pollution and waste disposal costs generated by artificial formula use
  • National health care costs are reduced as breastfed babies and their mothers are healthier
  • There is less absenteeism from work as the breastfed children of employees are sick less often and their parents don’t need to take time off to care for them
  • Breastfeeding guarantees a healthier future workforce.
