Why breastfeed?

The decision to breastfeed is a very important one that can mean better health for you and your baby both now and in the future. In fact, given the choice, it is very likely that all babies would choose to be breastfed.

More and more women are choosing to breastfeed in Ireland, but almost two thirds have stopped by the time their babies are 3 months old and many of these would have liked to breastfeed for longer. Families should be supported to breastfeed for as long as they choose, even if mothers are returning to the paid workforce.

There are advantages to breastfeeding for even a short time and research shows that the longer you breastfeed the greater these advantages are for you, your baby, the environment and Irish society.
