Your question:

Can I breastfeed with flat or inverted nipples?

Expert’s answer:

If you have flat or inverted nipples it is possible to successfully breastfeed.

During the first few days, (before your milk comes in) when your breasts are soft your baby will learn to latch on to your breast. Their strong suck is perfect to help draw out flatter nipples.

When your milk comes in here are some tips you can use to help make it easier for your baby to latch on:

  • Massage your breasts before a feed
  • Try hand expressing or reverse pressure softening to soften the area around your nipple
  • Apply a cold compress to the area around your nipple.

If your baby continues to have difficulty latching on ask your midwife, public health nurse or breastfeeding support volunteer for help.

Using nipple shields to help with latching on can lead to further problems.
