What can I do to prepare for Breastfeeding?

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare your body for breastfeeding – nature has programmed it already. Eating a healthy diet during pregnancy will help. Check out our booklet ‘Healthy Eating for Pregnancy’.

While breastfeeding is natural it is also a skill that you will need to learn, it may help to:

  • read our booklet ‘Breastfeeding a good start in life’,
  • talk to friends or family members who have breastfed, and
  • visit a local breastfeeding support group to chat with other Mums.

Your local maternity hospital or unit may have antenatal and breastfeeding classes you can attend.

Some practical tips include:

  • Once you reach around 35 weeks pregnant, get fitted for 2 or 3 good nursing bras.
  • Buy plenty of nursing pads. You can choose disposable ones or washable ones. If you choose washable ones remember to use a non-bio detergent to wash them as your nipples may be extra sensitive in the first few weeks.
  • Get some comfortable, light and loose fitting tops and some vest tops. Wearing a vest top underneath a loose fitting top will help you feed discretely.
  • When buying maternity wear keep an eye out for pieces that will work afterwards too, some maternity wear works well for breastfeeding too.
  • Cook extra meals and freeze them so when you come home for the first few days and weeks you don’t have to worry too much about cooking.
