Your question:

Why do I need to express milk during the night?

Expert’s answer:

If you are expressing to provide milk for a premature or ill baby, or because you need to build your milk supply, you are encouraged to hand / pump express at least once between 12 midnight and 6am.  The hormone that stimulates milk production, prolactin, is higher at night time especially in the early weeks. Expressing at night, when there is more prolactin in your system helps build and maintain your milk supply.  Mothers find if they drink a large glass of water just before bedtime it helps to naturally waken them to pump their breastmilk during the night

Breastfeeding babies, like all babies, naturally wake at night to feed.  This routine is very important for helping to build and maintain their Mums milk supply.
